North Korea has demolished parts of the roads connecting it to South Korea, according to South Korea’s military. The Joint Chiefs of Staff stated that sections of the road just north of the military demarcation line were blown up around midday (03:00 GMT) on Tuesday, as reported to the media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The military fired warning shots south of the demarcation line, according to reports. Seoul had warned on Monday that Pyongyang was planning to demolish the roads. Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have escalated since North Korea accused the South of sending drones carrying propaganda leaflets over its capital, Pyongyang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The explosions came a day after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un called a meeting with his top military and security officials to discuss the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the meeting, Kim Jong Un called the flights a \u201cserious provocation by the enemy\u201d and outlined unspecified tasks related to \u201cimmediate military action\u201d and the use of his \u201cwar deterrent\u201d to defend North Korea\u2019s sovereignty, according to state media on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier, North Korea placed frontline artillery and army units on alert, ready to attack South Korea if drones were detected over its territory again. While South Korea has not confirmed sending drones, it warned of severe retaliation if its citizens\u2019 safety was compromised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The destruction of the roads aligns with Kim\u2019s efforts to sever ties with South Korea, officially cement it as North Korea\u2019s principal enemy, and abandon the long-standing goal of peaceful reunification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 2020, North Korea destroyed the inter-Korean liaison office, signaling the collapse of a period of detente between the two nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
