The latest action follows Pyongyang’s accusation that South Korea sent drones carrying propaganda leaflets over its capital.
North Korea has demolished parts of the roads connecting it to South Korea, according to South Korea’s military. The Joint Chiefs of Staff stated that sections of the road just north of the military demarcation line were blown up around midday (03:00 GMT) on Tuesday, as reported to the media.
The military fired warning shots south of the demarcation line, according to reports. Seoul had warned on Monday that Pyongyang was planning to demolish the roads. Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have escalated since North Korea accused the South of sending drones carrying propaganda leaflets over its capital, Pyongyang.
The explosions came a day after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un called a meeting with his top military and security officials to discuss the issue.

During the meeting, Kim Jong Un called the flights a “serious provocation by the enemy” and outlined unspecified tasks related to “immediate military action” and the use of his “war deterrent” to defend North Korea’s sovereignty, according to state media on Tuesday.
Earlier, North Korea placed frontline artillery and army units on alert, ready to attack South Korea if drones were detected over its territory again. While South Korea has not confirmed sending drones, it warned of severe retaliation if its citizens’ safety was compromised.
The destruction of the roads aligns with Kim’s efforts to sever ties with South Korea, officially cement it as North Korea’s principal enemy, and abandon the long-standing goal of peaceful reunification.

South Korean officials also noted that earlier this year, North Korea started placing antitank barriers and mines along the border.
