Delhi IMD issuing an orange alert and warning of hailstorms for updates.

With the IMD issuing an orange alert for the city, citizens must stay updated by checking the weather forecast.

Saturday morning greeted Delhiites with a light drizzle and obscured sunrise due to dark clouds. The IMD predicts light to moderate rain and possible hailstorms in select areas. An orange alert has been issued, urging citizens to stay updated through weather forecasts.

The current maximum temperature in Delhi, recorded at 29.6 degrees Celsius, is three degrees above the norm, while the minimum temperature, at 10.8 degrees Celsius, is two degrees below normal. With rainfall forecasted for Saturday, the maximum temperature could drop by up to four degrees Celsius. This means that Saturday’s maximum temperature is expected to be around 24 degrees Celsius, with the minimum temperature around 15 degrees Celsius.

What is Hailstorm?

A hailstorm is a weather phenomenon characterized by the formation and precipitation of hailstones, which are solid balls or lumps of ice. Hailstones typically form within thunderstorms when strong updrafts carry water droplets to a height where they freeze into ice. These ice particles then collide with other droplets and grow in size until they become heavy enough to fall to the ground. Hailstorms can cause damage to crops, buildings, and vehicles, and can be accompanied by heavy rain, thunder, and lightning.

The capital’s air quality index (AQI) stays in the moderate category, thanks to heightened wind speed and a shift in direction. On Friday, the wind blew from the south-west to east, as per the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM). Due to this changing weather pattern, the weather department has issued a two-day alert. A drop in both minimum and maximum temperatures in the district is expected, potentially leading to a rise in the number of viral patients being admitted to hospitals.
